iPhone 5 To Possibly Feature Curved Glass

The speculation continues about what the next generation iPhone may or may not feature today with the rumour that the iPhone 5 could possibly come out to play packing a curved glass display like that seen on the Samsung Nexus S, and as Apple has previously used curved glass on the previous generation of the iPod Nano there is a possibility that this rumour could hold some substance.

According to an article over on Cult of Mac by way of Macrumors, this latest iPhone 5 speculation comes via DigiTimes claims that according to unnamed industry sources Apple is going to adopt curved glass for the iPhone 5g, or iPhone 4S as some are calling the device.

Apparently the word is the high cost of the tech to product curved glass makes glassmakers reluctant to adopt the tech but apparently Apple has forked out for 200 to 300 glass-cutting machines to do the task and apparently are being stored at "associated assembly plants."

As for just when we are likely to see the iPhone5, with or without curved glass, the article states…" There has been no timetable yet for the volume production of iPhone 5 as Apple is currently still working with related suppliers including those involved in cover glass, glass cutting, lamination and touch sensors to improve yield rates, the sources commented."

Having said all this, previous rumour has it that the next generation iPhone wouldn't be that much different from the iPhone 4 when it comes to design, so for now at least this latest rumour should be taken with a spoonful of Apple sauce.

Reuters Joins Growing List; Predicts September iPhone 5

In what is definitely the most legitimate source to join this list of those predicting a later-than-usual iPhone 5, Reuters reports of a September 2011 iPhone 5.

Reuters reports that the much anticipated won't be released in June 2011 as previous iPhones have around this time every year; news that will definitely disappoint those holding on to hopes that previous reports were nothing but mere speculation.

According to the report, the iPhone 5 will begin production sometime in July and will be ready for a September 2011 release that is likely to coincide with the annual fall media event Apple is known to hold; a seemingly perfect fit for the announcement of the iPhone5.

The Reuters report also confirms that rumours around the iPhone 5 featuring the iPad 2′s dual-core A5 processor are true and that it is also likely to include 64GB of storage capacity (much like the white iPhone 4), a slightly larger screen, and an aluminum back as well.

The report goes on to suggest that the iPhone 5 will remain structurally the same as the iPhone 4, but will have totally revamped internal components.

A better idea of what we can expect the iPhone 5 to be like will be after Apple's annual World Wide Developers Conference, where they've publicly stated to unveil the new iOS 5 that the i Phone 5 will sport when released.

There are mixed feelings out there about Apple's decision to break the trend of releasing iPhones in the summer, but it might be a better deal for eventual owners of it, as it gives Apple even more time to fine-tune the iPhone 5 to perfection and avoid the re-occurrence of problems its experienced in the past.

The later-than-usual release of the iPhone 5 might also throw Apple's biggest competitors off-guard as they could've been expecting Apple to keep with previous trends and release the iPhone 5 this summer, but we'll have to wait quite a while to see if that has any positive/negative effects on them.

iPhone 5 delay has holdouts re-eyeing Verizon, white iPhone 4

Hindsight is supposed to be 20-20, but those who skipped the iPhone 4 in 2010 or the Verizon iPhone in early 2011 with the expectation of being able to buy an iPhone 5 in June are now scratching their heads and still attempting to put together the puzzle pieces in order to figure out whether passing on the iPhone 4 was a mistake and whether taking the plunge now would be a corrective action or only compound their original (possible) mistake. Welcome to Apple, a company which does not discuss future unannounced products (except when it wants to), and has no intention of telling you when the iPhone 5 will see a release date (except that it kind of just did). Now it's up to you to figure out whether you regret taking a pass, and whether you can fix it.

By any measure, Apple wants you to buy an iPhone 4 now instead of waiting. That's why it pre-announced the white iPhone 4 release via Twitter. That's why it's releasing a white iPhone 4 at all. It's not just about pushing a sought-after new color to market in the hopes of motivating people to take the plunge. It's about telegraphing the fact that the iPhone 5 is clearly coming later than expected. Look at it this way: the white iPhone 4 is only a few days old, and yet June is three weeks away. Anyone who thinks Apple released the white iPhone 4 just for the sake of turning around and burying it that quickly is probably naive enough to end up on the wrong end of the buying spectrum one way or the other. So how long will the iPhone 4 era continue? A season sounds about right. Our guess is early September. But that's just a guess, one you can act on if you like, but one which we're not sure about so you shouldn't be either.

It all comes back to whether you now think you blew it by not buying an iPhone 4 earlier on when you had the chance. The "reasons" many folks skipped the iPhone 4 (supposed antenna issue, supposed scratching issue) turned out to have never existed in the first place. Other issues which were real, such as the proximity sensor bug, were cleaned up in software updates. And the iPhone 4′s original lack of Verizon compatibility and a white noodle have since been cleaned up with subsequent hardware releases. In other words, the iPhone 4 is now everything you wish it had been at launch – plus you've learned that it never was a lot of things that detractors had claimed. But is it too late now?

The iPhone 5 will be here before the year is over. Buying an iPhone 4 now means that you'll either have to pay through the nose for the iPhone 5g when it arrives (thanks to unsubsidized pricing), or you'll have until late in the iPhone 5 era to nab one at standard pricing, or just skip the iPhone 5 altogether. Is that worth it just so you can get your hands on an iPhone 4 now? That's your choice to make. Here's more on iPhone5.

iPhone 5 Fake Keynote Rehearsal by Steve Jobs

If all the speculation about the iPhone 5 isn't enough for you, there is now apparently a video floating the net waves of iPhone guru Steve Jobs rehearsing the iPhone 5 intro keynote, although one does have to say it's obvious that it is a fake. According to Cult of Mac, apparently the Steve Jobs in the video sounds a lot like George W. Bush, and according to TUAW, by way of Macrumors, the fake video says that the iPhone 5 will have "digital scent technology" and a battery that doesn't require charging.

The video can be found on Chinese site Tudou and lasts 46 seconds and even has the Steve Jobs impersonator stopping mid keynote to change his shoes and says they are as light as an iPhone5.

Have to say it is a considerable poor attempt at faking an Apple keynote, but the big question here is why would anyone want to create such an obvious fake? Smell-o-vision and a lifetime battery sounds good though, lol.

AT&T Rep Says No New iPhone 5 In June or July

We’re getting more and more reports all the time which suggest that we wont be seeing the iPhone5 until September. At the moment it looks like it’s set to be revealed at Apple’s music event in September instead of at WWDC.

Now we’ve got an unverified report in from an AT&T Customer Care member representative who says that Apple has officially confirmed with the carrier that there will be no iPhone 5 in June or July, breaking the normal iPhone refresh cycle.

This report came from a reader at Macrumors who was inquiring with AT&T as to why his upgrade was pushed back 5 months.

As part of a response outlining AT&T’s criteria for determining upgrade eligibility dates, the agent reportedly offered the following statement as fact:

Apple has informed us that they do not plan to release the iPhone in the June to July timeframe, though there will be a newer version in the future. Unfortunately, we have not been given a release time for the new phone. We will release this information on our website when it is available to us

Of course we can be rather skeptical of any of these rumors. Generally customer care reps will not have that much information regarding new product launches, but it does tie in with all the other rumors we’ve had to date.

iPhone 5 to come in ‘standard’ and ‘pro’ flavours?

Apple could be set to offer a double whammy of smartphone goodness this year, with news that the Cupertino massive is to launch two versions of the iPhone5.

The iPhone Download Blog is reporting that the new iPhone will come in two variations: standard and pro.

Now the iPhone Download Blog isn’t the first to send rumour and speculation skipping off hand in hand in Apple land, but it seems that this specific piece of information came from an insider who believes that Apple is stocking up on phone components of differing quality.

The components being ordered won’t fit into one iPhone so it is thought that consumers may be able to buy either a budget iPhone or one which has better components inside.

Alternatively, the differing components could be used in the new iPod touch that Apple is rumoured to be working on – which fits better than a complete strategy change from Jobs’ lot.

It is still thought that the iPhone launch will miss its annual June release in favour of a release sometime in September – a date usually kept for the launch of new iPods.
